Karen and the Red Shoes — scene 1

Once upon a time, in a small Danish village, there lived a little girl named Karen. She was very poor and had only one pair of old, worn-out red shoes. Every morning, Karen would look down at her shoes and sigh. The leather was cracked, and the red color had faded to a dull brown. Other children in the village had beautiful, shiny shoes, but Karen only had these old ones. She would wiggle her toes inside them and feel the holes where her socks peeked through. Even though her shoes were old and tired, Karen took care of them as best she could. She would wipe them clean with a damp cloth and try to make them look nice. But deep in her heart, Karen wished she could have beautiful red shoes like the ones she saw in the shop window. She dreamed of shoes that would sparkle and shine, shoes that would make her feel special and pretty.
