The Corn Maiden — scene 1

Once upon a time, in the beautiful Southwest desert, there lived a group of Pueblo people. But these people were very, very hungry. The sun was hot and bright, and the desert sand stretched as far as their eyes could see. They looked everywhere for food - under rocks, behind cacti, in every corner of their village. But there was nothing to eat. The grown-ups worried, and the children felt their tummies rumble. The desert was dry and empty, and the people did not know how to make food grow in this hard, sandy ground. They needed help, but they did not know where to find it.
